Candidates for Vice Chair

Marti Franc

Running for a 3-year term, progressing to Chair and Past Chair positions.

 1. What interests you in being a part of the Council?

I’ve appreciated the opportunity to be a District Councilor and to help develop a guide for Councilors to use in setting up and running District meetings.  We’ve learned a lot together about making these meetings productive and interesting for residents and we’ve shared learnings across districts.  It’s been challenging, fun and sometimes frustrating.  I look forward to continuing to create opportunities for residents to engage in effective communication with the Council. At the same time, being a part of the Exec Team has afforded me the chance to learn from RV Admin about important issues from their perspective and to relay to them the interests and concerns of residents.  If elected Vice Chair, I want to continue that process with the RV Board of Directors, facilitating collaboration of residents with both the Board and the CEO.

2. What would you like everyone to know about you?

I view the chance to become Vice Chair, then Chair and Past Chair as both an honor and a significant responsibility.  I’ve really enjoyed getting to know many residents in the two years I’ve lived at Rose Villa.  I can’t imagine a better place for me to live.  I’ve had lots of fun, participated in many activities, enjoyed the community garden, and been involved in many aspects of emergency preparedness.  Unfortunately, I’ve already lost a couple of good neighbors and friends at Schroeder Lofts.  That happens as we age.  But I’ve felt and seen so many instances of community support and caring.  It would be a privilege to continue to represent our residents in the larger Rose Villa system.  I would continue to serve to the best of my ability, with honesty and a sense of fairness.

Candidates for Treasurer

John Watson

Running for a 3-year term.

I have been interested for much of my adult life in being involved in the larger issues of the institutions I have been part of.  While I was on the faculty of Kent State University in Ohio, I ran for, and was elected to, two three-year terms on the Faculty Senate.  While in the Senate I served on a “Commission on Scholarship,” seeking to define more clearly what was being rewarded when faculty were granted tenure, promotion, and merit pay.  I also served eight years as Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, and chaired the search committee for the newly created position of Vice President for Information Services.  And after I retired, I served briefly as Vice President of the 250 member condo-owners association of the complex we lived in briefly before moving to Portland.  I am comfortable with budgets, and have created Excel spreadsheets for our family finances, so the position of Treasurer seems like a natural one to stand for.

I have had three great passions or fascinations in my life.  In 1961, when I was a freshman in college, I met Phyllis, and she has been the love of my life, my enduring passion, ever since. When I was a sophomore,  I took Physics with Calculus, and discovered that it was nothing like high-school physics. So I ditched political science, and physics became my major and my career path.  When I was a  junior, the physics professor I worked for part-time introduced me to nuclear structure, and the fact that neutrons and protons inside the nucleus have well-defined quantum orbits inside the nucleus, rather like the orbits electrons have around the nucleus.  I was totally fascinated, and studying these orbits in the nucleus, and their consequences, became the primary research area I worked in for more than 40 years.

Candidates for Foundation Liaison

Loiuse Williams

Running for a 1-year term.

1. Why I want to be on the Council.

As incoming President of the Foundation Board, I serve on the Resident Council as well. I am excited about this opportunity at this time because with Glen, our new CEO, and Alexis, our new Chief Philanthropy Officer, I want to help enliven the presence of the Foundation in our community. The role of the Foundation is a cornerstone of the support we give one another, a role I feel honored to support.

2. Something about myself.

As a resident for 4 years here, I have an expanding sense of gratitude for this community.  And, as I talk with others, we share that sense of gratitude.  I feel very blessed to live here in this community. My gratitude also includes being able to share my passion for shamanism with others who wish to explore this ancient spiritual practice.
