Susie Petterson — Natives with Ornamentals

Susie Petterson

After retirement, Susie wanted to create an artistic garden in their large, uphill backyard. With a minimal knowledge of plants she visited gardens and enrolled in an extension class in Master Gardening at OSU. She visited garden sales, nurseries and joined the Hardy Plant Society when fulfilling her Master Gardening volunteer hours in public gardens.

Suzie Petterson's garden

Birthdays passed and her garden GREW. So big, it outgrew her ability to manage it! They moved to a townhouse with a small, manageable front yard and a sunny deck to support a rainbow of bright annuals in pots which she tended for the next eleven years.

When moving to Rose Villa, Susie chose a home with a side garden she could once again cultivate by planting both natives and shrubs to create her dream garden. Here she wanders through daily enjoying the meditative and soothing quality of gardening with the music of bird song beside her. Gardening has taught her to practice more patience, perseverance, appreciation of nature’s gifts, and gratitude for the joys gardening brings to her.
