NAYA’s New Family Housing Shelter
Dear Neighbors,
The Land Acknowledgement Circle is working to become allies with our Native neighbors. Here is our first opportunity.
NAYA’s New Family Housing Shelter
NAYA (Native American Youth and Family Center) is a Portland-based organization that works with urban Indians to provide a variety of programs for children and adults, including preschools, a high school academy, and low-income housing. They have just opened a shelter for homeless Native families in Milwaukie.
Auntie’s Place (from NAYA’s flyer)
NAYA’s newest endeavor: “Auntie’s Place,” is a family housing shelter designed to offer vital support for our families facing housing insecurity. The shelter includes eight private family rooms that can each sleep up to seven household members. Common spaces, a community kitchen, and laundry facilities are also part of the new shelter.
With a focus on uplifting cultural identity and fostering community connections, the shelter adds a much-needed component to NAYA’s continuum of housing services, providing an entrée for Native families to access stable housing.
The opening of NAYA’s family housing shelter is the result of a collaborative effort between NAYA, NW Housing Alternatives, and Clackamas County. We thank these partners for their belief and support.
What Rose Villa residents can do
NAYA has set up an Amazon account to facilitate donations to the families. Rose Villa residents can make small donations of essential household items that will be very helpful to the families through this account. You can choose an item to donate and then make a payment to Amazon. The item will go to NAYA and then be delivered to the shelter.
If you wish to support the family shelter, please use this curated Amazon Wish List, which will be continuously updated as residents come and go. The intention is to provide new items for each new family, as the items will be theirs to take with them to help them in the next step of their housing journey.
