Mary Cooper (South Main)
Mary is a painter and fabric artist whose friendship with international students and her compassion for the black culture have inspired her work over the years. In the 1980s she enjoyed making and selling beautiful silk scarves, which she sold in art shops in her area. The variety of weaves and weights and textures made for exciting and varied results. Later Mary used silk dyes to create her colorful pictures. Painting with silk dyes is interesting as the dye spreads in different ways, and the degree of brightness and the interesting results of over painting is sometimes surprising.
