Carl Petterson — Boating

Carl PettersonCarl in the racing shell The photograph at the right was taken on Saturday morning, June 14, 2014, when Carl was one of eight rowers on an eight-place, 60 foot-long racing shell — a mixed team of men and women, and one 14-year old boy. The team was participating in the Rat Island Regatta in Puget Sound. The leaders that morning made an error. The lead rower suggested they warm up before the start and misjudged the time. Just before this picture was taken, a loud horn signaled the start of the race and the rowers are all looking around to see the other contestants begin the race. The starting point was the dock at the right side of this picture. They turned their 60 foot-long boat, rowed to the starting line, and tried to catch the earlier contestants.

By 2019, Carl had raced in this regatta eight times. In seven of these races he and his crew got blue ribbons from being first in class. The 2014 regatta was the only time they placed second in their class and received a red ribbon.

Carl explains what happened that Saturday in his story Racing On Puget Sound, 2014. (The PDF will open in a new browser window.)
