Cathy Schwabe — Baking

Cathy SchwabeA love of baked goods and parking karma were two things that Cathy’s cousins and their mothers always agreed had been passed down on their maternal line. Daily baking figured large in their grandmother’s growing up and she continued this tradition with her own family. By the time Cathy and her cousins were in the picture – though baking had shifted from something daily to a special holiday and or birthday treat – the love of home baked goods remained. Pita BreadChristmas in Cathy’s childhood was all about bread baking – and two favorites that remain a part of hers and Vita’s holiday season are pita and cardamom bread.

In anticipation of the move to Rose Villa and the realization that a favorite locally baked bread would no longer be available, Cardamom BreadCathy took a sourdough baking class and came away with some of the bakeries prized starter. The starter traveled to Rose Villa – and is used for bi-monthly Walnut Levain Bread and less frequently for chocolate, walnut sourdough scones. Other baking favorites include an Italian Easter Bread called Gaduda – one of Vita’s memories of her maternal grandmother’s annual offerings.
