Susan Hyne — Fruits & Vegetables

Susan HyneSusan lives in classic cottage #57 in the South Central neighborhood. Her unit’s south-facing back yard provides good solar exposure for gardening. Each year, one of her two raised beds is home to a tower of snow peas. The rest of the garden space is overflowing with a mix of veggies plus blueberries and LOTS of strawberries (grown from a few plants provided by a neighbor the year she moved to Rose Villa).

Susan also has a stacked terracotta pot compost tower. It fits into a small space and provides a composting option very close to her kitchen.

Susan enjoys using a simple solar cooker in her back yard from April through October. Fruit compote and applesauce are favorite items to slow cook with the heat of the sun.

Every year presents different opportunities and challenges for Susan’s garden. In past years, she had luck growing sunflowers. Another year, she focused on hanging pots with herbs and lettuce.
