Rob Holt — Boating

Rob Holt (Garden Grove)

Rob HoltRiding a wave at MendocinoRob first became interested in paddling in the late eighties when he and his partner Marie moved to Damascus, just minutes from the Clackamas River. Rob borrowed an old kayak and learned how to roll it in a swimming pool with the help of a local kayak shop owner. He spent several years paddling the rapids of the Clackamas, Deschutes, Molalla, North Santiam and other Northwest rivers with friends before venturing out to the waters off the Oregon Coast.

Rob says a fit paddler can average 3+ mph so it is easy to travel 10-15 miles a day in good conditions. He became interested in longer paddles and, having been a backpacker most of his life, it was an easy transition to camp out of his boat. He and his partner have done a couple of multi-day trips in the San Juan Islands, paddling from island to island and camping, and would like to do more of that.

Rob tells his story in “My Life On (and In) the Water.” (The PDF will open in a new browser window.)
