Sue McGraw — Baking

Sue McGraw (Garden Grove)

Sue McGrawBaking and decorating sugar cookies is an activity Sue has enjoyed for many years. She is a breast cancer survivor and during her treatment she hosted cookie decorating parties for her retired teacher friends. She baked the cookies and the group met to decorate them — Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter. Each person took home a dozen decorated cookies. The event gave everyone a chance to be creative (they copied decorating ideas from each other) and to visit and reconnect. Sue says, “It was therapeutic for me at the time.”

Below is the cookie recipe from a dear friend of Sue’s who baked the cookies for her third grade class.

Judy’s Sugar Cookies

1¼ cups butter
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
5 cups flour
1 tsp. salt
4 tsp. baking powder
½ cup milk

Cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Add eggs. Mix dry ingredients together and add alternating with the milk.

The dough is quite stiff but sticky, so refrigerate for a couple of hours before rolling out. I roll them out on a floured surface. Also bake on parchment paper for ease in removing from the pan.

Bake 375 for 10-13 min. depending on thickness.
