Sally Sharrard — Writing

Sally Sharrard (North Main)

Oregon Ski Tours (Archives, 796.93), published in 1973. Sally and Doug Newman wrote this book in 1973 in the early years of cross-country skiing when there were no groomed trails or skis with plastic treads. The book was written to introduce skiers to cross-country ski trails in the Oregon Cascades. Each description starts with the type of tour (trail or road), length and location followed by an engaging narrative, a few pictures, and a hand-drawn map. Sally’s partner, Doug, was an avid outdoorsman and newspaper writer who wrote about hiking and skiing trails throughout the State. The Oregon Recreational Trails Advisory Council annually awards the Doug Newman Memorial Award to honor an individual or organization who has made significant contributions to non-motorized trails. The Council was created by law in 1971 to advise the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department to promote non-motorized trail recreation. Doug would laugh today to know the highway department has placed Sno-Park spots throughout the Cacades and named them after the trails in this book.
