Theresa Carney — Obituary

Theresa CarneyTheresa Clare Carney (Dec. 17,1926 – Feb. 4, 2021)

Theresa was born in Youngstown, Ohio, and was the seventh of eleven children. She is survived by her longtime friend, Nancy Rorden, her eldest sister Marie of Sacramento, California, her brother Thomas of Houston, Texas, and her sister Carol LoGuidice of Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, Mexico. After graduating high school at 17-year-old Theresa joined the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown, Ohio, an educational order. She earned her BA and Master’s degrees in elementary education as a teacher and administrator. She left the Ursuline Sisters in December, 1967, but continued teaching. She joined the Department of Defense Dependent Schools in 1969 to teach in the overseas program. She was a teacher and school administrator on American bases in Japan, Holland, and Germany for the remainder of her career. Theresa was in schools for 43 years.

While overseas she took the opportunity to travel worldwide. When possible she took organized tours but mostly she loved traveling and camping in a small RV or trailer through most of Europe. She became an accomplished photographer and enjoyed collecting treasure from her world travels. She retired in 1991 to Salt Lake City then in 1999 she moved to Rose Villa retirement community where she gardened and became active in the community, including being the Chair of the Resident Council. She continued her traveling and camping with the state, Canada, and Mexico. She died February 4, 2021, eleven days after a major stroke. In lieu of flowers a donation in Theresa’s name can be made to the Rose Villa Foundation. She is interred at Gethsemani Cemetery.
