Day Trip: Historic Oregon City

Oregon City is a wonderful place for a walk: a short distance south from Rose Villa on McLoughlin, it features tons of historic homes, a lovely walking path on a bluff above the Willamette with gorgeous scenic views, and well-marked historic sites. One marker informed us that Oregon City was the first incorporated city west of the Mississippi. The city website is at https://www.orcity.org/. Here are some historic houses we saw. On the left is a gorgeous Victorian; on the right i the Francis Ermatinger house with a closeup of its descriptive plaque. Many of the historic houses have those plaques.

Here are some photos from our walk along the McLoughlin Promenade along the top of the bluff on the east bank of the Willamette. You can see the Oregon City Falls in the middle photo. Before the concrete wall around the falls was built, the water would rush in from all sides. The bush with its silly face overlooks the bluff.

There is plenty more to see. We’re told there is an excellent farmer’s market in season and lots of nice restaurants to try.
