Earth Day Bird Walk

by William Scheible

In observance of the 51st annual Earth Day, Rose Villa residents Ed McFarlane and Bill Scheible guided friends and neighbors on a walking tour of our campus, seeking to find and identify those birds most frequently seen and those who probably nest on the premises.  Staying within the boundaries of our campus, groups on April 22nd and again on April 23rd confirmed 24 species of birds busily doing their business. Birds discovered ranged in frequency from White-crowned Sparrow (one each day) to Lesser Goldfinch (many many). Portland’s record driest April allowed folks to enjoy an hour outdoors in nice weather.  Conditions were near perfect.
Many trip goers were surprised at the number and variety of birds that are with us nearly every day.  To quote Yogi Berra, “You can observe a lot by watching.” Enthusiasm voiced following each day’s walk will no doubt see a second annual Earth Day bird walk in April 2022.
Below are a few of the many beautiful photos taken during the walk.
