Elka Bee’s Coffee Shop Cafe

by Mary Claire Phelan

My daughter, Michelle, just treated me to high tea at Elka Bee’s in Happy Valley. It was delightful in their charming little back room. We were served blackberry shrubs (natural syrup at the bottom of a glass of sparkling water; it’s called a “sparkling Ribena” on the menu) to start. The three of us could order two pots of tea from their extensive list, so chose pear green and very berry. Both were flavorful. Then came a large round tin packed with decent-sized crustless sandwich rounds of thin-sliced Turkey with cranberry sauce, cucumber with cream cheese, and egg salad, along with warm scones, and mini spinach quiches. Along side this, butter, berry jam, clotted cream and lemon/lime curd from Scotland were served for spreading. Then came a small dessert platter containing chocolates, small lemon bars, madeleines, Turkish jelly bites, shaped multi colored marshmallows, assorted macarons and a wafer I didn’t recognize. All was delicious. The room was charming. Reservations are recommended for high tea.
The wide open front is one long room with lots of comfortable upholstered but low seating with tables, and a few harder, higher chairs at small round tables. It looked like orders are taken at the counter displaying lots of baked treats. I don’t know about prices or the rest of the menu because I was treated, but found it someplace others may like to visit once they see the menu online. Michelle had taken friends there several times. The owner has spent time in Britain and did come around to talk to all those taking the Tea.
Reservations are required for high tea.
