Grand Union Flag

Over the weekend and today I have been flying a Grand Union flag, which is the first national flag of the United States. It has the flag of Great Britain (circa 1776) in the canton (the upper left corner) rather than the blue field with white stars we’re used to.

The Grand Union flag was used until early 1777, when Congress specified that the canton was to contain a blue field with white stars rather than the Great Britain flag.Interestingly, the new Flag Act didn’t specify the arrangement of the stars, hence the well-known Betsy Ross flag with the 13 stars in a circle. According to Wikipedia there were several competing designs, including one that had 12 stars in a square with the 13th in the center of the square.
